Description:
Carfilzomib (news articles), which is a second-generation proteasome inhibitor, selectively targets the enzymes that break down important proteins in cancerous cells. Multiple early-stage studies have shown that carfilzomib has an encouraging safety profile, with low levels of neuropathy (a common side effect for many myeloma treatments). A Phase 2 trial with relapsed and refractory myeloma patients has recently closed enrollment, and results are expected in late 2010.
