Medical Musings

Lonnie Nesseler, a myeloma patient and pianist from San Diego, maintains the Medical Musings blog. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 1998 and received his first stem cell transplant in September 2005, which put him into temporary remission. He started his blog at the beginning of 2009 to describe the process of his second transplant that he was supposed to have in February 2009. In detailed posts, Nesseler describes the changes that had to be made to his treatment plan due to the severity of his disease, the reduced-intensity transplant that he received from a matched, unrelated donor in June 2010, and the outcome of the procedure. He updates his blog about three times a month.

Dear Lonnie – You have surely earned your angel wings today in our conversation that so greatly put some things into perspective for me. Having just received this diagnosis, I have been all over the place with feeling devastated, confused, and uncertain about treatment options. I was told I was ineligible for stem cell transplant treatment due to being 70. And offered a clinical trial so I was grateful to hear ideas about treating with what was needed and not more than what was needed in this early stage. Many thanks. Please drop a line as I don’t have your email after all. Love and aloha – Nancy
